Abstract

Despite the central role of start-ups in the economic growth of countries and the efforts made to support them, the difficulties of their survival are particularly acute in a context where 90% of them fail (Aminova & Marchi, 2021; Krishna et al., 2016).

However, this finding calls into question the effectiveness of entrepreneurial support strategies that focus more on the upstream and creation phases, which have allowed quantitative progress to be made. However, this remains insufficient, as the survival rate of supported firms after creation is still widely criticised.

The aim of this article is to understand how post-creation support can contribute to the survival of start-ups by addressing these determinants.

In order to answer this question, we have chosen a methodology based on a synthesis of the available research, which allows us to examine the different factors that determine the survival of start-ups. Second. On the basis of our proposals and conceptual framework, we have attempted to explore these determining factors in the context of post-startup entrepreneurial support by examining the different practices, attitudes and support systems available to incubated companies.

The results of this research show that the process and mechanisms of post-startup support generate factors that explain and lead to the survival of supported start-ups. Based on our conceptual framework and the arguments presented in the article, these determinants are grouped into four main components: the characteristics of the entrepreneur, the resources and organizational characteristics of the firm, the environmental and contextual factors, and the factors of start-up preparation. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications and limitations are discussed.
