Community resilience in the face of the establishment of mining industries in Mali
Abstract
Community resilience has become a priority in African countries. For the majority of donors who support them, mining must be a source of development for the State, particularly in mining areas, which are supposed to strengthen the resilience of communities. However, the experience of community resilience is complex for the different actors involved (the host community, local authorities, the mining company and the administrative authorities). Indeed, it is a question of developing areas which have suffered the impacts linked to the establishment of mining industries, while meeting the important social needs of citizens thanks to a strategy of consultation and dialogue. This article aims to understand the factors that strengthen the socio-economic resilience of host communities.
This research is carried out in the Kayes region, specifically in the communes of Sitakily, Kéniéba and Sadiola. Data was collected from local populations, institutions and mining companies. For their analysis, we used descriptive statistics techniques as well as the logit model. The main results of the study show that the living conditions of communities remain subject to various hazards. We also observe that the communities in these areas perceive the effects of the establishment of mining industries and develop various strategies to adapt to them.
