Abstract

Researchers and practitioners state that the low level of employee engagement at work is currently one of the most alarming global economic problems ((Zhong, L., & al. (2016), Menguc, B., Auh, S. (2013)). This phenomenon can cause a drop-in performance at work. Therefore, it becomes important to understand the concept of work engagement, its meaning for employees and its implications for employers. The objective of this article is to produce a review of the body of theoretical and empirical literature that inquiries into the relationship between employee engagement and overall performance. This work will summarize previous studies according to their order and categorization, identify gaps in current knowledge, and propose an agenda for future research. The article presents these results in a synthetic way, offering the practical and academic implications that require them.
