The challenges of resilience in the context of Vulnerability: A Comparative Analysis Between Small Island Economies and Morocco
Abstract
This research aims to study the economic impact of the crisis on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Morocco, highlighting the risk mitigation and adaptation strategies used to strengthen their economic resilience. The objective is to identify best practices and draw lessons to strengthen the economic resilience of these developing countries.
The current global crisis has had an important impact on the global economy, with particularly serious consequences for developing countries. These nations suffered from a sharp economic recession, a significant rise in unemployment, an increase in poverty and a deterioration in living conditions. Small island states have been particularly vulnerable to multiple shocks, including the pandemic, drought and the war in Ukraine.
Thus we address the issue of vulnerability highlighting the need for economic resilience to face such challenges.
In order to answer this question, we opted for a qualitative approach with a comparative documentary analysis which seeks to examine the commonalities and disparities between Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Morocco with regard to economic impact of the crisis and the economic policies and strategies adopted to deal with it.
Our study showed that SIDS, despite their uniqueness compared to Morocco, adopt a dual approach. On the one hand, they implement specific measures aimed at mitigating risks, such as dike construction, reforestation and natural resource management, in order to reduce environmental threats. On the other hand, they engage in a process of progressive adaptation of their society to increase their resilience.
Faced with growing vulnerability, the path to resilience requires combining instantaneous mitigation with transformational adaptation, with related social, economic and environmental changes, aimed at making SIDS and Morocco capable of responding adequately to shocks. while maintaining the continuity of their activities.
